Rehearsal Journal / Asynchronous, Non-Performing & In-Person Students
Rehearsal Journal
Rehearsal Log Suggested Guidelines
Log each rehearsal by writing down the total length of the rehearsal and the tasks that were accomplished in chronological order.
Reflect on each rehearsal in a journal entry. The journal should provide a space in which you can reflect on the rehearsal you just had and consider how that might shape the rehearsal you are about to have. My suggestion is to pick a particular question/challenge/discovery and spend significant time with it (as opposed to simply reporting in on many aspects of the rehearsal). The journal truly should be a helpful step of your artistic process as opposed to Here are some questions that you might consider while writing a journal entry:
1 ) What important discoveries were made during the rehearsal?
2 ) What led to those discoveries?
3 ) Towards where do those discoveries lead?
4 ) Consider questions #1-3 except focus on important roadblocks/dead ends.
5 ) Reflect on dramatic action and conflict. How’s it going? What
actions does this suggest?
6 ) Reflect on transformational leadership. How’s it going? What
actions does this suggest?
7 ) Reflect on the journey of one or both of the actors with whom you are
working. How’s it going? What needs to happen next?
8 ) What is the most important thing that happened (or didn’t happen) in your
recent rehearsal? Unpack its importance.
9 ) What is the most important thing that could happen in your next
rehearsal? How will you shape the rehearsal in order to increase the odds
of that “thing” happening?
10 ) Consider where you’re at in the grand scheme of all rehearsals.
How’s it going? What actions does this suggest?
Your journal entries should be authentic and rigorous. They should engage both theory and practice. They should use your own examples from rehearsal and our shared vocabulary.

JOURNALING
Bella F., Eric, Okera
We felt connected and our emotions were expressed throughout the dance. We fed off each others energy. We mastered the timing of the movements with the counts of the music and recorded it so we can practice on our own.
When we rehearsed together, we feel more connected and bouncing ideas off of each other. We were able to connect the dots and practice with our music and figure out the timing of each movement and whether we wanted to go faster or slower. Our movements are both bound and free flowing.
Amanda Rojas
While rehearsing, I have noticed how hard it is to memorize and piece together the steps with the music. Sometimes, it is also hard to let go and be creative. However, I've been able to let go and make it come together as much as I can.
Simon Heaster
I have to say that even though it is a decently long dance to remember (and it is a dance that we are making from scratch), it has helped significantly having the ample amount of time to practice the dance. Over the course of this semester, we have continuously learned new pieces and movements that have definitely helped me combine them together to form a strong dance that is over one minute long. I feel like later this week, putting together the final pieces and continuously practicing them will give me confidence going into the final dance next week. I am excited!
Sydney Dymant
I am really enjoying practicing my solo piece but I am having a hard time remembering my dance. I also notice that the movements and progression look perfect in my mind but then my body is not creating the exact movement I am picturing. I will keep working on this.
Krishna Louis
I had to change my song three times because the other songs did not match with my story-line and tempo of my dance movements. I think the song I chose is perfect for my story since it changes beat from slow to a more upbeat, matching with the conflict and resolution to my story. Trying to tie all the movements with the new song is challenging because I do not want to miss a beat, but with more practice I know I will be more ready for my solo. New song is Trust and believe start at 45 second.

This is my first dance creation. Each part is very simple, I can consider the story, choose music, or free dance. However, it is difficult to combine them. The dance must match the story and must match the music.

When I was doing my rehearsal and practicing my movements, I found it
was hard to catch up on the following movements. And the song that I
picked was not a song with a strong and clear rhythm to follow with.
Also, memorizing all the movements that I created and put them together
as an integrated piece is a task for me.
Zixiao Dong
I took a long time to think about my solo movements. I try to make the
moves harmony with the music rhythm which cost me lots of time to deal
with it. But I am really emjoy to do those things because this is my
first time to think deeply on the moves and make a dance by my own.
