Performance Day / Dance Recital (R) - Spring 2021
Modern Dance II ® Spring 2021 Recital
Every semester, Modern Dance II is the host of a dance recital that brings the work created by the students during the semester to full fruition. This semester, students have choreographed solo and ensemble pieces which reflect their creative process. Their pieces reference the work of the forerunners of modern dance in Europe and in America.

Unstable Composure
Choreographer: Ashley Debartolo
Dancer: Ashley Debartolo
Music:
My piece is about a girl who struggles and has struggled in the past with anxiety. I am the main character of my dance. It shows the struggle of finding balance - between clam and composed and unstable and anxious. Essentially it is about navigating the difficulty of everyday challenges and how emotions can either help one get through it or tear them down. The movements are sometimes slow and free; they reflect a carefree life. Other movements are fast and frantic; they resemble a feeling of being rushed and unsteady.
Waves
Choreographer: Brianna Djonovic
Dancer: Brianna Djonovic
Music: Waves by Dean Lewis.
The story is about me learning and growing as I learn new lessons in life and finding my own way. I start off as uncertain and end up confident and reassured by the end of the piece.

Synopsis
Breakout
Choreographer: Anna Taber
Dancer: Anna Taber
Music: Hurt for Me—SYML
My dance displays character development of myself over the years. At first, I appear to be closed off— keeping to myself. As my piece goes on, I start to break out of my shell and take more risks in terms of both skill, level of difficulty, and also in terms of letting my body feel the movement as opposed to a more choreographed and placed phrase. This exhibits the goals I have been working towards in both my dancing and in my everyday life.
Untitled
Choreographer: Jonathan Zach
Dancer: Jonathan Zach
Music: M83 - Midnight City
I think a lot of my dance is almost about letting go of the fear of. being in front of everyone and breaking free. I think the music I picked for it parallels with that and I am excited to share it. With the song being called midnight city, the story is about a kid who travels to a major city from a small town and is very timid of the future to come. through the music and dance he starts to feel more free in the city.
ENSEMBLE PIECES
Theory of Evolution
Choreographers:
Ashley Debartolo, Alexa Debartolo, Caitlin Kaplan, Trajan Bandy
Dancers:
Ashley Debartolo, Alexa Debartolo, Caitlin Kaplan, Trajan Bandy
Music:
Our piece resembles the story of how humans came to be. It starts with an eight count phrase that shows how we humans became bipedal, and how we humans 'grew' into the beings we are. We incorporated flowing movements to show how the way humans moved became less rigid. We started with staggered movements, and the end of our piece shows the last push of life. We are relaxed and fulfilled. We perform frantic and fast movements to keep living as long as possible. To end our piece, each of complete our life cycles at different times and in different ways.
The Young and Naïve

Music: "Save Your Tears" by Life in Legato
The title of our piece is hope. The song is an instrumental of "Save Your Tears". Our dance is all about hope. It takes place in a warm tropical place in the summertime. We are all hopeful for individual things however we are all friends so as a group we portray hopeful people. This dance also represents supporting one another. I in particular am hopeful for future opportunities in my career. My fellow dancers are supporting me. Each person has a separate thing they are hopeful for. We are very excited to perform this piece.
