Performance Day / Dance Recital (Q) - Spring 2021

Modern Dance II (Q) Spring 2021 Recital

Every semester, Modern Dance II is the host of a dance recital that brings the work created by the students during the semester to full fruition. This semester, students have choreographed solo and ensemble pieces which reflect their creative process. Their pieces reference the legacy of the forerunners of modern dance in Europe and North America.  The students' works, listed in the program below, are an expression of their own stories. Welcome to a space where dance art matters!

SOLO PIECES

My piece is about family. These include being encouraged when I encounter difficulties in life, sharing happiness when I am extremely excited, and the unique feeling of being in it. It's still a bit vague because I'm still thinking about how to express this feeling in the form of dance.

Finding What Is Lost

Choreographer: Jayci Eskalyo

Dancer: Jayci Eskalyo

Music: When I was Older by Billie Eilish

We need stories in dance for inspiration and to feel challenged. Stories are the engine that dance needs, even though, according to Crystal Pite, dance is an ineffective way to tell a story. My piece is about trying to get something back that was lost. This storyline will allow me to incorporate floor work, fluidity, and more of the elements that have been taught this semester.

Choreographer: Simon Heaster

Dancer: Simon Heaster

Music: Ends of the Earth by Kenny Chesney

My dance is about relaxation and the peacefulness of life, along with the concept of fluidity and the ability to create unique, free-flowing movements through a calm and relaxed mindset. I am going to keep this theme throughout my entire dance, making sure it is smooth the entire time and movements are very peaceful and fluid. Connecting these various pieces together, as I have been practicing, will enhance the ability to create the expression of happiness and peacefulness. My music choice will help me in creating this overall theme.

My dance would be to follow the experience of being a student who is ready for graduation and bring all memories that happened to me to my next journey.
